It is so nice to see someone who is happy to take the media spotlight that is shined on them and reflect it back on those who are so thoughtless. I have never seen a nursery school class that responded to a child with a disability in a negative way unless acted upon by an outside force. Sometimes in the name of protecting kids we create more harm than the actual event, this is one of those cases. As one responder said, my child didn't even notice (maybe it was because they were too busy singing along :)
I was scared the first time I worked with children with Down's Syndrome however I so came to realize that my fear was driven by the unknown and that it was quite unjustified. I am happy to see that many of today's younger generations have a much more mature relationship with people with disabilities. I would content that this might be one of the benefits of the mainstreaming movement and it might be considered a topic to address for children who are home schooled or in Private school. Seek ways to expose yourself and your children to people different from yourself might just be one way to better prepare them for the future and spark conversation on diversity, compassion and fairness. Or, in this case, bravery...poise and confidence all good traits in this modern world.
